OK, this appears to be MOSTLY due to the bug #761065, referenced at: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+bug/761065
Applying the 'fix' noted in comment #16 corrects a 'microhang' problem that I was having that seems to have caused the 'lockup' portion of this. Type-searching is still 'slowish', but it has the feel more of a 'by- design' slowness than a 'hang' slowness. After applying the fix, it is about a 1 second delay from typing to the appearance of the results -- and some of this is the fancy slide-down effect of the menu. The problem I was encountering seems to have been related to the fact that with the semaphores disabled, every type search caused a microhang.
