I assume the bug is in update manager, but maybe it was in portmap and
update-manager just caught the error flag?
Anyway, update-manager threw the following info about the bug:

I've already filed a bug about a failure to install portmap (Bug
#692089). At the end of the installation step, I got the message in the
Summary line, plus, The upgrade has aborted . . . will run dpkg
--confgure -a . . . E:Sub-process /us
PS - the machine won't boot now it gets to the point where the GDM
should start and hangs. I can't get to a login prompt even in recovery
mode. I'm now trying another distro's live cd to get to the log files.

Re machine won't boot
I managed to get to a console although it was a lot of work (recovery mode
didn't work, Alt+Fn didn't work, many reboots etc). Ran dpgk --configure -a -
it produced no output. Because I wasn't getting the graphical display, I ran
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. I also ran
I fixed up the Window Decorations problem in my previous post, by following the
solution here:

so the machine is back in service at least.
It looks like the broken Window Decorations may have been just a
coincidence.
