I had the same problem trying to compile quilt 0.46-7 for jaunty.

I don't have anymore a system running jaunty and I cannot reproduce this
anymore on karmic,
I made some tests on my ppa and it builds fine...
I believe this could be something related to the "mail" program installed.

I made another test and removed the "override_mail_sender_in_testsuite" patch
from quilt 0.46-8ubuntu1 and it still builds...
So I found on the changelog:

override the mail sender in the testsuite so that it works even on
misconfigure
I'm having the same problem on Kubuntu Karmic 9.10 with ppa:kubuntu-
ppa/backports enabled
gdb reports nothing...

This patch adds r-base-dev to build dependencies, that means that

It also installs rbackend.desktop and adds r-base to cantor suggests
