In the attached screenshot (usr-share-vnc.png) nautilus shows the contents of
/usr/share/vnc after "flipping the triangles". When I then do File > New Window
and then double click on vnc, nautilus hangs - the screenshot was taken after 1
minute!

However, after the reboot it turns out I have a workable system. For as
far as I can see any update fails at the end with an abort. The update

Isolated the cause of the problem:
1) Start the system
2) On the gdm screen login as a non-root user : no "extra" mounts
3) Via Ctrl-Alt-F2 open a console
4) On that console login as root : no "extra" mounts
5) On that console issue "startx -- :1" : the "extra" mounts occur

Even with an empty startx session (no nautilus, no teminal) for root the
problem occurs - the "extra" mounts appear as icons on the desktop.
Opened System > Preferences > Removable Drives and Media > Storage and

As an aside: irrespective of whether the above options for root are set,
when a non-root user (or the administrative user) inserts an USB stick a
popup "Cannot mount volume, You are not privileged to mount this volume"

My "administrative" user experienced the same symptoms after upgrading the 80
packages that were updated since Apr 11.
Invoking the "Windows" Preferences gave a popup "Cannot start the preferences
application for your window manager", "Window manager "unknown" has not
registered a configuration
The "mount, fdisk, fstab etc." attachment was created via "script
thescript" - because of the escapes in the prompts this file is
indicated as BIN, but it is a harmless text file.

Doing the umounts in /root/.profile does not work.
Created the /root/bin/_umounts script to do the umount "manually".

I had the same problem (or a problem like the one at hand).
In posts #12 through #15 the user commenting out a line in hist /etc/cryptsetup
file resolved the problem.
As I did not have that file I installed the cryptsetup{,-bin} packages and
rebooted: problem resolved!

In Xubuntu 16.04 I used the TigerVNC 1.8.0 debs as provided by upstream

For Xubuntu 18.04 however upstream points to the Ubuntu re

I have a strong suspicion that the delay at boot is caused by the swap and/or
root partition(s) being re-initialized and therefore getting a new UUID ...

For a correct understanding: this re-initializing of the root and swap
partitions is the verification step of my backup procedure -- and my restore
procedure of course.
