Scanning for all devices on startup is a design decision dating back to
the initial development of GParted.
A work-around to scanning only the devices required is to pass these on
the commmand line to gparted.
You are free to submit a patch upstream [1] to alter this behaviour.

I was able to work-around this issue by rolling back only the *libgl-
mesa* packages from version 18.0.5-0ubuntu0~16.04.1 to version
17.2.8-0ubuntu0~16.04.1.

GParted uses the libparted library from the parted project to handle
many of the partitioning tasks.
Would you be able to provide the output from the following command?
sudo parted /path-to-your-device unit s print
Where: /path-to-your-device is something like /dev/sdb.

Bsed on the parted output, the entire USB device is formatted with a
fat32 file system and there is no partition table on the device.
GParted currently only works with partitions on partitioned devices.

The problem still exists on Kubuntu 16.04.
With a fresh install of Kubuntu 16.04, I proceeded to install wine with:
sudo apt-get install wine
After this completed, I noticed in the Application Menu that all of the
wine apps were listed under "Lost & Found" instead of "Wine" as they
should have
