I can confirm denny479s result.
After upgrading from 7.04 to 7.10 (Feisty to Gutsy) I had this problem too.
With the /usr/sbin/automount from Feisty the automounting works in Gutsy well.

I had this problem on Ubuntu-8.04 32bit.
After Upgrade it is still there in 8.10 32bit.
The same holds for 9.04 64bit with a fresh install.
After having remotely logged in by a ssh-connection with X11-forwarding, either

Verified this on a Thinkpad X230 with lastest Ubuntu 18.04/Linux Mint 19 kernel
and Archlinux (4.17.8-1-ARCH).
For me, however, the symtoms are a bit different:
After boot and after device being removed, devices are not recognized
anymore wehn plugged in.

Skype has already fixed this in their client a while ago (new profiles
default to "Desktop settings").
If you are an upgrading user your user profile might still contain the
old setting where Skype does not enforce a profile update. The
workaround above fixes that.
