I've setup an interim linux-backports-modules-2.6.24 in my PPA
containing a r8168 module (from upstream 8.006.00 and above patch) and a
patched r8169 module which ignores 8168's pci id (so it won't autoload).

I can confirm this bug on my Dell Vostro 1710 running Jaunty
(2.6.28-11-{generic,server}).
It occurs only once on every boot, when GDM starts (and thus does its
prefetch), provoking a ~30s blank screen with heavy disk activity before the
login screen.

BTW, IMHO the better fix for this bug is to cherry-pick the fix from linus'
tree directly into linux-source : it is nearly a one-liner and is included in
mainline kernels.

I saw exactly the same behaviour with several other packages in various
PPAs (which are not always essential)
For example in my ppa vmware-player keeps reinstalling, but not vmware-
player-kernel-modules and vmware-player-kernel-modules-2.6.14-* whereas
they are built from the same source package.
This sounds like a 64bit-only problem.
I've rolled out a 64bit specific package based on upstream 64bit tarball. Can
you test with this one ?

I've identified various problems in latest xen-3.1 source package :

kind of hypervisor/kernel :
it will break many setups where (non-PAE) domUs don't share the kernel image

Gutsy kernel 2.6.22-7-generic missing rt61 mo
The problem is that lowlevel drivers (rt2400pci.ko, rt2500pci.ko, rt2500usb.ko,
rt61pci.ko, rt73usb.ko) are not built, only the high level drivers
(rt2x00lib.ko, rt2x00pci.ko, rt2x00usb.ko) are.
The root cause of this seems to be that the .config is not automatically
included in recursive target

[Gutsy] rt2500 driver missing from rt2x00 driv
Hmm, that's strange.
I've just checked with a fresh clone of git://kernel.ubuntu.com/ubuntu
/ubuntu-gutsy-lum.git, in a freshly updated gutsy chroot.
I've issued :

It seems the problem did not really disapeared for me. The CTS protection
somehow got disabled on my AP.
After a power failure, my AP rebooted with CTS protection enabled, and the
freezes came back.

(worked with every hardy's kernel)
My config is WEP/open using NM
Since a few kernel updates, I have to manually force speed with
"iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M" after associating or it runs at 1M.

I compared various /var/lib/dpkg/status and /var/lib/apt/lists/ppa*_Packages
entries.
All the packages that keep reinstalling have a Pre-Depend field in the status
file but not in the Packages file.

Same problem here (plus drivemount applet do not appear when

Poweredge 860 by applying a bunch of patches backported from 2.6.16 (see
