There clearly is a difference between fonts being on the hard drive and
usable by lilypond and the same fonts being installed so that they are
also usable in other apps such as Lyx, Ooffice, scribus etc. They have
not been installed, in this sense, on my system (Ubuntu 9.04, lilypond
2.12.1-0ubuntu
Here is the png that shoud have been generated by snippet above. This is
the png that occurs in lilypond documentation.

The attached png is generated by the following snippet (from the
lilypond documentation) on my system. This suggests that the \number
font idoes not choose the correct font.

Final lilypond output does not use the feta-nummer font for numbers.
Instead one of the other fonts on my machine is used. This is most
obvious in time signatures.

bojo42's solution seems to work. But may I suggest you copy
/etc/pulse/daemon.conf to ~/.pulse/daemon.conf and then edit that file, which
will then take precedence over the system wide file.
