This bug is not resolved in 9.04, I've had this bug in 8.04 also.
I'm running 9.04 and compiz fusion.
When I right click on a link sometimes instead of popping up the normal right
click menu one of these thing happens:

- Open in new tab

After reboot I have emulation mode again - so I run modprobes again.
It turned out that after I enter these two commands, touchpad starts to
work, but all gnome defined hotkeys break (including fn keys, such as
brightness, and event terminal).

I also just have just found out that on last reinstall had the same message
about binaries-only. Also I found out that the module was not build (after post
#252 - I have not found module), so I built and installed it manually, and now
touchpad works after reboot.

I have the same problem.
It freezes in both: Skype and Cheese. Sometimes it freezes after one second,
the other times after 5-10 seconds.
I noticed that if reduce resolution to 176x144 in Cheese then it does not
freeze and works fine!
But when Skype starts my cam it uses 640x480 so it freezes an

previously I had 3.19.0-12, and I am not sure at what moment the problem was

Indeed. In fact several years ago it was exactly this bug that forced me
