I've been looking into crontab and the hourly task cron configuration
and can't find any reference to calls to common_session_noninteractive
nor to pam_mount.
I really need to stop cron + pam from periodically dismounting the

As a temporary workaround I commented-out the pam_mount call in
/etc/pam.d/common_session_noninteractive
No apparent breakage, nothing of interest in the logs other than that I
see in that cron still runs hourly, but now it leaves my mounted
partitions alone :)

thanks for your comment. It's been a while since I've reported this bug.
Luckily I've been able to resolve it by switching over to the open-
source radeon drivers. Haven't had a crash of this sort (or any X.org
crash for that matter) for almost a year now!

I gave up on centrino and bought an atheros PCI express module.
SparkLAN 11abgn Atheros AR9382 half size minicard (WPEA-121N)
$35 bucks or so. This module is 2x2MIMO dual band, equivalent to

workaround.
On my PC the problem only appears when I'm booting on 2.6.38-8 Kernel.
With 2.6.35.28 booting on "first try" works without any problem. Booting
to Windows7 works on first try as well.

OP: Did you fix your problem? today we attempted an apt-get update /
upgrade of our two ubuntu servers and one of is now dead with this

affecting our production environment and we may need to go away from
ubuntu-serve

Actually we were lucky yesterday and found that the boot failure was due
to a typo in /etc/interfaces that one of the guys made. It turned out
that the ureadahead error is "harmless" and has nothing to do with the

Unfortunately nvidia.NVreg_EnableS0ixPowerManagement=1 did not work on
an old Asus Rog Maximus VIII mobo (Kabylake), nvidia 1650.
I also tried this:
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power-management.conf
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
and it didn't work either. Missing textures after
@Sebastian adding both the kernel parameter and the two lines in the
nvidia module conf file works for "systemctl suspend" - the machine can
now resume OK when on wayland.
Curiously though, when I try systemctl suspend-then-hibernate (my
default way of suspending), I get the following in dmesg:
