I just tested it on my Thinkpad X1 (haswell) and the fix works.
However, there is a side effect. Connecting and Disconnecting the
Power resets the brightness to maximum. Not sure how to go about
working around this.

Yes you can. I am getting around the problem by typing CTRL+ALT+t for
the terminal then launching whatever I need but no window management
so once you have a terminal on top of the other, you can get back to
it :)

That is enough CPU utilization to keep the laptop's fan on.

kernel's team ppa) and it works perfectly every time.

BTW, I am running 3.4 kernel from the Canonical kernel team PPA
(http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/) and the issue is
