Upgrading to the 2.6.27-7-generic kernel supplied with the Intrepid upgrade
solved this problem for me with no tinkering.

I resolved this situation by locating the desired file
'iwlwifi-3945-1.ucode' in an older kernel's firmware folder:
/lib/firmware/old_kernel_name/
I simply copied it into the /lib/firmware/2.6.27-7-generic/ folder and
the message disappeared from dmesg.

Concurring with the above. Upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy on a Dell
Inspiron 1420 Laptop fails to recognize *any* soundcard.

Again, concurring with the above: installing the linux-rt package from
Synaptic and rebooting restores sound to its previous Gutsy performance!
Any pointers on how to revert to the generic kernel once they get the

Workaround: appending rootdelay=10 onto the kernel's GRUB options solved
the problem for me. I guess the VFS partition isn't available early
enough in the boot sequence for the *-16 kernel.
(ESC during bootup, press 'e' on *-16 kernel, press 'e' on "kernel..."
