hm yeah my presumption was wrong, and calling hdparm -q -S240 -q -Y /dev/sdb
does set the time and put the drive to sleep without spinning it up instantly
again. i should have tested that before, sorry.
question is, as mihai said, what does access the hd at that time. the
partitions are encrypte
the annoyance of this problem is, that you have to find out why kvm_intel is
loaded, although you have set up a blacklist for it.
if i put something on a presumable system-wide blacklist, i dont expect it to
be loaded in another way.
it this patch is not included, than the manpage of modprobe.d

my udevd has 65:12.70 cpu time after only 10hrs uptime after upgrading to
karmic final (from 9.04) (udev version 147~-6, kernel 2.6.31-14).
i did not suspend/stand by... only the monitor was put to standby by power
management.

i have a harddisk, that is only used for backups and is unmounted and spun off
most of the time. sometime when i launch vlc (normally through opening a file
in nautilus) the drive spins up.
the drive is attached via sata (ahci mode) as /dev/sdb, has
agreed and i will improve it, whenever i can. i have created a wrapper script,
that launches vlc via strace and logs the output to a file.
the main reason for posting it in the first place, was that maybe others (and
myself) get motivated to contribute there own findings later. ;)

the drive spins down possibly before pending changes are written out so
unmounting has to ensure that later by waking up the disk and commit the
changes. also drives can spindown themself without OS interventi

i have an updated maverick installation which i just hooked up to a second
monitor and tried to manually "duplicate" my bottom panel on the 2nd monitor.
indicator applets seems to work well == all icons are on both panels.
window list seem to work ok (only windows located on the monitor where the
unsurprisingly in maverick/10.10 the problem persists.

i hacked together a patch that retries to bind mount once with MS_REMOUNT added
to the flags instead of printing out the warning. it seems to work, but i don't
have the insights if it may break anything.
with this it is possible to bind mount a directory in fstab with options
"bind,ro", as well

Similar to bug #659620, udisks seems to be called on AC state changes,
which tries to call /sbin/hdparm -S 12 /dev/sdX on all block devices.
this was revealed by changing /sbin/hdparm to a script, which echo
i can confirm that there is again a problem with login in to icq.
but this time it is only for ssl connections: disabling SSL in pidgin "fixes"
it.
either it's a temporary problem with the ssl icq servers, or this is a new bug
and should be treated as such.

this is still an annoying problem in lucid with gnome while running
buggy/verbose software. the file needs to be truncated in realtime and should
be disabled or put on a ramdisk for ssd users imho. this potentially breaks the
users' hardware in the long run without anything being really broken (
