I have this problem too. I just noticed it today when I started up and
it was using metacity instead of compiz, and I was unable to switch to
compiz.

I went to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers and removed the
proprietary fglrx driver, then restarted my computer. glxinfo and
glxgears started working again, and told me I had direct rendering.

Daniel, I don't think this report is invalid. I'm not using version 1.6
of X. Though I remember there was a recent update to X in the repos,

I downloaded the file I attached, S[RLO]iva.exe. Viewing it in both
nautilus in a folder and directly on the desktop still renders the
deceptive filename.
This is on a fresh , fully updated Hardy install.

can't remember what I did that fixed it.
One thing that it may have been was that I once accidentally deleted all
files from my system with the string "file.so" in them. Using apt-file,

Oddly enough, windows didn't seem to notice the strewn file/dir names. I
ran an error detection/fix from windows' properties > tools tab of the
device. I'm not sure whether it was windows itself, or the error
detection run, but the filenames were cleaned up. The strewn stuff was

I may have discovered something important.
If something is using the sound card, the swf will play (with no audio
of course) without crashing. This probably means it's a sound issue with
swfplayer. Here is the terminal output from playing the above flash with
Firefox open and another sound-using f

This flash works fine in firefox.

Yes, I was upgrading to 7.04 and the update manager suddenly started
giving me errors and the option to report them, all at about the same

I have neither an nvidia or an ati card, that I know of. I have a crappy
i810, so a video card driver can't be the problem for me.
I can confirm the "no suitable windowing system found, exiting." bug,
and that I have managed to fix it somehow.
