I have had similar problems with Xubuntu 13.10 and VirtualBox 4.2.18. An upgrade to VB 4.3.2 did not solve the problem. The shared folders appear to be present but "ls" hangs. At one point, I saw ls eventually crash with an out of memory error. Perhaps it was in a recursive loop looking for the
