I also see this problem. I see it with BBC (British Broadcasting Company) news stories. Here is an example URL:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/7566804.stm I am unable to play this in Firefox. The Adobe flash plugin can play these sometimes, but crashes Firefox frequently. I've tried gnash and swfdec without success. I tried opening the URL for the flash directly in totem and got the error message give in the original poster's description. The URL to the flash animation is: http://news.bbc.co.uk/player/emp/2_3_3887/player.swf, but I expect any of the BBC animations will produce similar results.
