My laptop (HP530) will not suspend at all when the lid is closed. If I
close Suspend from the shutdown menu, it works perfectly and will resume
when I open the lid and push Power (this laptop cannot resume simply by
opening the lid) but closing the lid does nothing.

I can confirm. This issue exists also in Ubuntu 9.04. It was working in
Ubuntu 8.04.
What changed?! Someone must know!

When i used Ubuntu 8.04, closing the laptop Lid caused the system to
sleep. When i opened it, I'd hit the power button then the system would
wake and all was well. Ubuntu 8.10 does not do this. When I close the
