It turned out, in my case, that grub toyed around with root=...
parameter in /boot/grub/menu.lst
I have the root filesystem on /dev/md3, this is noted in /etc/fstab and
used to be noted in /boot/grub/menu.lst
However, after that upgrade, now everywhere 'root=/dev/md2', no idea
why.

After I installed Kubuntu 7.04, it turned out that when I had the
mounted partitionsmessed up, ie mounted an ext3 partition as reiserfs
and vice versa, this problem repeated. On closer inspection, it stopped

On top of the described actual behavior, it happens sometimes that a
certain click activates some other programs. Sometimes, when hasty, you
click on another program, however, it is still processing the first,
which means now you have *disabled* that program.
I agree, it looks unprofessional and it might harm people with epilepsy.

I can confirm this. Gcompris hangs and if you have started it full
screen, as is the default, you're in for a alt-backspace or alt-ctrl-del
measure.
However, if you, from the command line, do

all your worries vanish. Apparently, tuxpaint is not installed by

However, instead of a splash screen, I get a black screen with a

Film of boot process.
Although not very sharp footage, you can see the mangled gnome splash
screen (just before we get a full screen gnome desktop) and you can see
the long delay at 'black screen wih just an X'.
Also you can hear sounds (I disabled nobeep in esd startup) and you can
see that gcom
Solved after all: a hardware problem. I swappen thin clients and all was
good on the spare one. And on the original one, with a different screen,
kb and mouse, the problem appeared again. So it's hardware.

the mouse works, and the black screen was replaced with a spalsh screen.

after a not-so-good upgrade to 6.10 via dist-upgrade, I am now trying to
reinstall from the liveCD.
I choose manual partitioning.
My /dev/hda1 = 10 GB, will be reformatted as ext3, so far so good.
My /dev/hda4 = 100 GB, is an existing reiserfs and should be mounted as

On a personal server with no X environment installed. I am wondering at
some of the dependencies of the boinc-client package. One in particular
that comes to mind is "bluetooth"... why is that a dependency? I can
understand the i386 libraries... it does however seem there are
I think boinc-manager may need some more graphic stuff, since it needs X, but
boinc-client is all commandline stuff.
The original poster put is as a question on launchpad, I made it a bug.
I am 100% sure other packages like git do not install so much nonsense.
