I can confirm this. Gcompris hangs and if you have started it full screen, as is the default, you're in for a alt-backspace or alt-ctrl-del measure.
However, if you, from the command line, do sudo apt-get install tuxpaint all your worries vanish. Apparently, tuxpaint is not installed by default, just like gnucap and gnuchess, which you need for two other items on the menu.
