I don't think it was valid for Intrepid because Ubuntu 8.10 never had a i686
kernel image.
This issue is gone because the packaging has changed. There is only one image
for the i386 architecture, i686 image is not needed anymore because the i386
image is optimized for all 32-bit CPUs, even i686.
Just as Dylan said, this is a big design change, not a small bug so it can't be
addressed by Ubuntu.
Please discuss it with the Gnome devs on ther mailing lists.

Feisty is EOL and no one has confirmed that this bug exists also in a
currently supported release so I'm closing it.
