FWIW, My issue was I had a redhat-release file in /etc, which I've
created some times ago in order to make some work scripts targeted to
RHEL 4 work.
Deleting this file fixed this issue for me.
It was a bit hard to debug given the lack of error reporting from hal.

Using ccsm, the parameter is "Lighting" in the "Display settings" tab of
"General compiz options".

After some more tests, it looks like evolution crashes whenever there's
still an email in the sent folder and evolution is online.
It crashed after I've launched it using evolution -c contacts.

There's no broken screen state in this issue. The screen goes mostly
black, except for the panel and the workspace switching OSD, only
during the workspace transition. After the transisition, everything
works fine.

I think I have the same issue. Suspend/resume using the panel menu works fine,
but suspend fails if I close the lid.
I get mainly a black screen when I reopen the lid, and sometime I get the "low
resolution" dialog.
