Upgrading to SMB version 3 seems to have fixed it, now running stable since 12
hours whereas the mount point went away after approx. 50 minutes with the old
version.

Ran into the same issue, and was stuck with apt not being able to get to
a working, clean state, see below.
I had to use aptitude (instead of apt), which gave a proper solution and
managed to deinstall, finally my solution was:
aptitude remove kde-telepathy-minimal
apt remove 'unity-*'

were all non-critical, and it did complete. I am using MATE 17.04 64

Ok, I had mutter depend on gnome-settings-daemon (which in Ubuntu
depends on the split-out schemas) in my packaging and the Debian
packaging. Except for GNOME 3.24, Ubuntu's mutter is in sync with
Debian.

To man
It still needs to be manually approved by an Ubuntu Archive Admin, but
that's usually pretty quick for syncs at this stage in Ubuntu's release
cycle.
