Testing upstream kernels will not help with this issue as Ubuntu carries
a newer version of apparmor than is currently upstream. From the back
trace it is clear to me that the bug is in the newer code that ubuntu is
carrying. I am working on a patch and have a test kernel building.

Seeing this issue too, on fully updated 12.04.5 LTS.
To temporarily resolve (spinning fan on laptop is driving me crazy) revert back
to lightdm/liblightdm 1.2.3-0ubuntu2.5 and restart.
(Synaptic: for both packages, select package, then menu Package->Force Version.
Afterwards, select both package
Can you boot in rescue mode? Can you boot with upstart?
Please boot without "quiet splash $vt_handover", and see how far you
get. (Make a photo of the screen or so, if you don't get far enough to
get a terminal). It would also help to boot with a debug shell, and get
the list of pending jobs there
