I built gnuplot 4.6.5 in 12.04.04, but it worked fine.

think about it as having firefox or chrome running in fullscreen-mode
below your xterm: what happens if you right-click in the area of where
chrome draws its pixels?

Not able to load the kdump kernel and generate the dump in Ubuntu14.10
This isn't limited to Unity. Just found my start-kde.log had swollen to
several gigabytes because of a V4L bug that VLC had been spewing out for
several minutes.
Upstart needs to be more clever about repeated messages. syslog can, for
example, munch quick duplicates and say "Line repeated x times"

The same error is still displayed on boot :

The primary difference that I see for degraded boot is this error just ahead of
activating volume group 'dataone'

and also after that point the 55-dm and 56-lvm rules d
attached dmesg output for normal boot up to premount

Here is what I did
Just like Bertram (bertram-q) ..
1) edit the file
/etc/default/grub
replace
GRUB_DEFAULT=0
With
GRUB_DEFAULT=1
2) sudo update-grub
3) Reboot
Issue fixed.

4-pin jack (for mic and headset). When i plug a 4-pin headset only output is
detected while input remains the same (it still using the integrated computer
mic).

The desktop environment ist not recognized correctly (I use unity desktop)
I could solve this by modifiying xdg-email method detectDE()
1. sudo gedit /usr/bin/xdg-email
2. go to method detectDE() {
3. insert the follwing two lines before the if-statement
DE=xfce
return
this might not work
I've 'nominated for trusty' since it does seem worthy of fixing and their is an
upstream fix; but someone familiar with the bug needs to follow the SRU
procedure.
(The 'fix released' is just an artifact that it's fixed in some release - it
doesn't in any way imply it can't be backported).
