Hello,
I did some additional testing and I can confirm that the reported
problem is not an Ubuntu bug.
The ASUS K53TA notebook contains an AMD CPU with integrated graphics chip (AMD
A4-3300 M APU with Radeon HD Graphics).
It seems that the "missing" memory is allocated by the graphics adapter.

Using the workaround proposed by Guido I was able to fix the problem
here under Precise 12.04 with a printer attached to another CUPS -Server
in the LAN. It seems to be important, however, that the PPD file be
named exactly like the CUPS printer name, or CUPS won't recognise it.

1:3.6.1~rc2-1ubuntu3 : cant upgrade it without removing previous version
on gnome-classic.
The good news is that 3.6.1 is out and works well (tested by few users).
So its time to drop these rc versions.

Agreed - I've been dealing with the odd necessary update to ichthux-*
from time to time as part of general archive maintenance, and sadly it's
quite clear that its regular maintainers have lost interest for quite
some time now.
