I think this is actually a bug in the mplayer version included in ubuntu
11.10. When using a cache, mplayer reports a huge number of chapters:

SMPlayer freezes because it is trying to populate the chapter menu with
millions of items.

On a new install it is working. On an old, upgraded system it is not (after
upgrading).
I had to add an dpkg-statoverride to get rid of the error. On none of the
systems affected there was a statoverride given for "/var/run/screen". No
startup files where modified.

I have tried all the options in the hope to get the speed stable. The
performance degrades slower if/when I had the:
options iwlagn swcrypto=1 ack_check=1
But to have it stable, I still use the 11n_disable=1
This issue we could celebrate it for the 3nd year. At least I never seen
the 11n working
