With xsane the experience has been even worse, causing the scanner itself to hang indefinitely and requiring me to restart the printer/scanner itself. This, too was a bit random, and also required a forcible quitting of the program.

Would it be any help to also install the scanner under Windows and, uh, do something to determine if there is some hardware issue?
