I use Intel DG31PR and face the same problem. I did find a workaround
though. Instead of plugging in the audio jack in the on-board line-out,
I connect it to the front audio output on my cabinet. Sound works
perfectly. This is true for Ubuntu versions 8.10 to 10.10. I use 10.10
as of now.

My sincere apologies Rolf, I hadn't thought of the intricacies of
running Valgrind on a daemon.
Does the memory leak occur soon after a reboot/login, or does it take
time to accumulate?
I had a go myself at creating a Valgrind on notify-osd, and this is what worked
for me:
1. killall notify-osd
The bug was about byobu not reading PS1's formatting in ~/.bash_profile.
The fix apparently goes along "so just do not specify it there", which I
would not go as far to call it a fix.
My fix, if you can also call it that, is, instead, going to Menu >
Create new windows > Command: /bin/bash --login
