Oops, I also meant to ask you to cat the /var/run/sshd.pid to make sure
it is in fact the same as the one in status.
My suspicion is/was that the upstart managed sshd is conflicting with a
/etc/init.d/ssh managed sshd. On second thought I'm not so sure.

Thanks for you help. I did that by hand and then the apt-get upgrade worked
fine. When I tried to upgrade to 10-10 in the package manager, though, it
didn't work. I saw some postings concerning the same error message I got
where someone said the remove the nouveau packages and then they were able

Marking as resolved, as the rsnapshot packages does depend on liblchown-
perl as of rsnapshot 1.3.1-1 (maverick).
Regarding enabling cmd_cp by default, I would say that that is part of a
more general approach to rsnapshot.conf, such as covered by bug #278998.

Please close this. This system died 2 days later, completely. So there
was probably some lurking hardware issue that only showed its little
ugly head here. Sorry.
I would still be curious if there is a way to 'undo' a partially
installed package, manually.
