Well I did what Ais said and my problem seems to be good so far. After
a few hours my Xorg would approach 1.5GB, when i disable the effects it
would go down to 200MB. Now since trying Ais suggestion of reinstalling
from ATI website I am happy to say after a four hour uptime its @
227MB(started @

shmconfig based configuration is completely gone from the driver now
upstream. gpointing-device-settings from the same author has replaced

Made a fresh install of Alpha 3: USB PATA drives work, but USB SATA does

The same crash occured on my Karmic Alpha 3 32-bit on a Dell Studio:
On a ubuntu live boot, I was offered to install the proprietary wifi
drivers, which I accepted. I was then asked the root password, where I
just pressed (live CD, so I don't know any root password). Then
the crash occurred.

I have EXACTLY THE SAME experience as the user above, after manually
upgrading Ubuntu 9.04 to ATI driver 9-6.x86_64 (released about June,

not "lock desktop while screensaver is active".
