I have tried Kubuntu Edgy's daily livecd today and the problem is
solved.
In other words I think that I need to reinstall Kubuntu in order to
solve the problem.

I can confirm this. It should, and does not create these Gconf files. As
it stands, I had to compile it from source, and this is when I found out
about this bug. It creates them in the vanilla version, but not in the
ubuntu version.

I can confirm this. These 3 icons are missing from the "crystalsvg" icon
set but are required by this application. I am using crystal as my icon
set.

These 3 icons are present in the system at
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/konqueror.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/khelpcenter.png
/usr/share/icons/hicolor/48x48/apps/klipper.png
but it seems ktip tries to find them in crystalsvg only.

Ah, solved! I had dapper lines in my sources.list to keep track of a few
packages which hadn't been upgraded to edgy until a few days ago.
Somehow, this made apt believe it had unsolved dependencies. An apt-get
dist-upgrade wanted to remove a few packages to be able to install
sysvinit. I don't kno
Confirming that this module fixes the brightness hotkeys.
Does not fix the volume up and down keys however. Any ideas on that one?

I am not able to reproduce that. I just started evince 0.6.1-0ubuntu1
and choose Edit->Toolbar, the 'Zoom In' and 'Zoom Out' buttons are both
listed and I can add them to the toolbar.

It crashed again. I had only just opened it, and selected the same site
as above. Have listened to that site several times with no problems
since the last crash. Let me know if there are any more .dbgsym files
you want me to install in case of another crash.

When I run the integrity check on edgy rc alternate, it completes
successfully. When I press the continue button on the "CD is valid"
message, the integrity check starts over again. It should probably just
reboot, or throw me back to the debian-installer menu.

Fault on my side, which nm-applet actually revealed that I had one nm-
applet lurking in /usr/local/bin
removing it solved the problem.
