have you tried loading recovery mode and then loading GNOME from the console
(using the "gdm" command)? I used to be able to bypass the problem that
way.
As a follow up, I've simply installed Xubuntu 10.04 and everything had been
working perfectly until I had i problems this morning. I
I switched to Xubuntu 10.04 and am no longer having this problem.
