Michael,

have you tried loading recovery mode and then loading GNOME from the console
(using the "gdm" command)?  I used to be able to bypass the problem that
way.

As a follow up, I've simply installed Xubuntu 10.04 and everything had been
working perfectly until I had i problems this morning.  I can't exactly
recall what happened, but I'd left my computer on overnight (it was
upgrading as I went to sleep) and when I woke up I rebooted (I think) and
had one of the keys stick at the login screen.  This has been an isolated
occurrence so far and it's not much help because I can't remember all the
details, but if it happens again, I'll document it better.
