I get the same result with or without Compiz. As I already said, the
fresh account experiences the same issue too.

I would normally tend to agree that gnome-settings-daemon is most
likely the real cause, since it's already causing problems whenever
returning from sleep/hibernate on my laptop since "upgrading" it to
Intrepid. However, my "always-on" desktop (also on Intrepid)
experiences the same problems too, s
Just to confirm: in my case, there is NO .gtkrc in my home directory,
so the GNOME theme chooser should just work.
