I would normally tend to agree that gnome-settings-daemon is most likely the real cause, since it's already causing problems whenever returning from sleep/hibernate on my laptop since "upgrading" it to Intrepid. However, my "always-on" desktop (also on Intrepid) experiences the same problems too, so I'm really not sure what to think anymore.
