Sorry for not getting back with you earlier on this. I had to leave the
office yesterday.
The application the I used while I was on release 11.10 of Ubuntu was
called "Network Connections" in the GUI and it is located at
/usr/bin/nm-connection-editor. I started by installing a clean copy
(Oops, those two bugs probably aren't relevant, actually, since you
mentioned that your /run/resolvconf/resolv.conf was empty of nameserver
addresses. Sorry.)

Which application was it exactly? Was it the application started via System

If so then there may be a bug in gnome-control-center or NetworkManager such

Already restored symbolic link and configured network using
/etc/network/interfaces, and everything is now working correctly.
Initially, I did not use the /etc/network/interfaces file to configure my
network interfaces. Since I had installed the desktop GUI, I had used the
network GUI app

ln -s ../run/resolvconf/resolv.conf /etc/resolv.conf
and work with us to figure out why the dynamically generated file
/run/resolvconf/resolv.conf fails to contain the expect

did have a symbolic link there that pointed to a resolv.conf in a
/run/resolvconf/ directory, however that file only had a comment line in
it no nameservers!
