I have the same problem on my home build desktop computer running 64-bit Ubuntu
12.04 with kernel 3.2.0-24.
I have two video cards and therefore my case might be of interest for you. One
is Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT and the other is ATI Radeon HD 4870. Soon after 12.04
LTS was released I installed
Thanks so much Christopher, rigth now I'm using Ubuntu without ATI/ADM
driver, evething is ok without it, even when I will like to have 3D
acceleration I'll keep it without the driver until Conical or someone
else found the way to fix it !!!

I'm now running kernal release 3.4.1.1 and the NVIDIA accelerated
graphics (post release) update driver. Now, the Unbuntu "shut-down"
option works as expected. Previously it worked exactly like the
Unbuntu "Log Out" option.

Shutdown and Reboot failure on Dell XPS/NVidia/12.04
Sometimes "sudo reboot -h now" works, sometime not.
Had the same problem on 11.10 so I didn't install nVidia driver on a
clean 12.04 install but problem was still there. Installed the nVidia
driver because it didn't make a difference.

I experience this behavior with all my 12.04 machines, independent of brand,
physical, or virtual.
I think the working of halt has just changed. halt now halts the machine, halt
-p halts and powers off.
actually I don't see any documentation indicating that halt should power off
the machine.

Same problem on my new install. I have had this installed since middle
of April. Tried upstream kernel, checked INIT_HALT=POWEROFF and still
not fix. This is not an nvidia problem in my case as I have intel HD
3000.

Btw. this problem also occurred in previous Ubuntu releases. There
seems to be a lot of regression in Ubuntu :-(

Adding INIT_HALT = POWEROFF to /etc/default/halt solved the problem with
rebooting. I did not try to shut the machine down before adding the line
to /etc/default/halt, but after adding the line it works fine.
