Also experiencing this on a Dell Studio 1558 with AMD RV710 series graphics card and proprietary drivers. I wonder if there's something ACPI related - I'm getting this problem rarely when plugged in, but almost always when on battery power. Doesn't seem to be a problem with radeon open-source driver, but that has its own issues (constant fan, low battery life, etc.)
