Joseph asks me to upgrade to 3.0.0-19 but I did say in a previous
comment that I had done that, and the bug persists., He specifically
asks me to upgrade to 3.0.0-19.32 but all I can tell from the packing
info is that I installed 3.0.0-19 - I can't tell which issue of 19 it

I tried booting per instructions in the kernel debug (removing quiet
splash vt.handoff=7 options and setting gfxpayload=ext).
Well a whole lot of stuff whizzed by before my machine hung. Last meaningful
thing I saw was something like "running init.d scripts top to bottom" then a
ton of entries
to figure out how to do this first.
