that I couldn't get ubuntu work with the Xerox printer in Gutsy either
and I did not bother responding to the above note because I had no
confidence that my efforts would bear fruit. I had already spend an

it cannot be a kernel problem because I can print in Knoppix 5.1 on /dev/lp0.
I configured a generic PCL5e printer on LPT1 and printed the test page. One

printed right away with about a centimet
Curious though about these comparisons:
On LPT1:
DocuPrint has the above problem
HP 882C no problems
but both use same driver
As smb network printer
DocuPrint and HP both work perfectly.

So the driver seems also not to be the problem (you could also try to
send raw text to the printer via /dev/lp0, does that take so long,
too?).
Looks like this is a kernel problem.

I did the following:
"Edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf adding a line "FileDevice
Yes". Then restart CUPS with "sudo /etc/init.d/cupsys restart".
simply adding "FileDevice Yes" as a line without quotes, of course. and
restarted
Then I entered
sudo usb_printerid /dev/usblp0
sudo usb_prin
In the past I tried ljet4 and two Gutenprint drivers that were listed with
same result. I haven't tried adding a Generic PCL 5e printer. WIll try that
at work tomorrow.

drivers than HPIJS listed for your printer in the gnome-cups-manager,
choose the "Generic PCL 5e Printer" and there choose drivers like
"ljet4" or Gutenprint.

It now has tried to print for 40 minutes. So I took the printer offline and
printed 'form feed' which basically prints out what the printer has so
far. What it prints is about 2.5 inches of the Printer Test Page. So I
predict that it will print in 3 hours.

20 minutes. I must leave soon, but I will just leave it on and see
what happens. I assume this is my standard situation. It will print
sometime overnight!

If your printer is on parallel, usb_printerid will not give you anything
useful.
Set up your print queue with
sudo lpadmin -p -E -v file:/dev/lp0
and see whether your printer performs better this way.

After having all this information it is for sure not a problem of
foomatic-filters or the driver (PostScript-to-PCL filter). It seems to
be a problem o9n the communication between the PC and the printer via
USB.

I managed to borrow an HP Laserjet 5p from a colleague and
hooked it up to my LPT1 and was able to configure the printer and print the
test page in no time. It has to be the hpjis driver for this Xerox machine.
Printerbuginfo for the 5p also attached.

this printer and print the test page. Knoppix was using the Backend
Device /dev/lp0, Driver Type DB driver, Manufacturer Xerox, Model
