Evan, I forgot to say that I don't think it's the drive's fault, either.
Since the bug was reported (2007-03-25), I've been using the drive with no
problem at all.

Evan, I don't think it was a bad CD burn. I did a CD check with the boot menu
option, and the test was successful.
I burned the iso on a rewritable CD (I erased it, so I cannot test it anymore).
I upgraded from feisty to gutsy using "update-manager", so I did not test the
7.10 version.

This looks like either a bad CD burn or a dying CD-ROM drive (ATAPI 40X
CD-ROM CD-R/RW drive). Are you able to test again with a different CD,
preferably using Ubuntu 7.10? I also noticed that you have both DVD-ROM
and CD-ROM drives in the computer. Do you experience different results

Yes, Greg, I was able to install. This is the workaround:
Instead of launching ubiquity via the desktop icon, I opened a Gnome
terminal, and launched ubiquity from the command line, passing the "--
desktop --no-migration-assistant" options.
It worked perfectly, then.

Thank you for reporting this bug and making Ubuntu better.
This looks very similar to bug 126108 but the UbiquitySyslog is not
quite the same.
