System will not boot unless the battery is charging

The symptom I am having with the computer not booting:
1) The hard driver is accessed momentarily but then nothing happens (no
sustained HD read, no boot, no banner, no BIOS)
2) Touching the power button momentarily turns the computer completely off
instantly.
3) Attempting to start the computer
I recently had removed the NVIDIA drivers as I suspected the driver was
responsible for very heavy CPU activity (and heat).

I should clarify. On my laptop, the light indicating an adapter is
attached DID NOT COME ON until the battery was discharged somewhat.
Unless that light was on, regardless of the battery charge state, the
computer would not boot. This could be a battery and/or adapter
hardware problem.
