If I set the interface to nat, the machines are not available from the network.
I set the interface up via virt-manager and it offers no extra options on a
routed network, so if extra parameters woule be required, that's a bug in the
GUI.

I can't reproduce the 100% cpu by kvm. However, your xml for the second
bridge is not right. You specify "forward mode="route"" then you need
to specify a bridge to route over (like br1). I suspect what you wanted
to use forwarde mode="nat".
