Sorry for my late reply, but I had already completely wiped KVM and my
bridge.

Redid the setup and the situation is like this.
- With the default virbr0 everything works
- Adding virbr1 on 192.168.120.0 routed has no effect on existing hosts, even 
when they get switched
- Adding a 12.04 server with virbr1 as interface triggers the hang and high load
- Adding 11.10 server with virbr1 works fine
- Adding 12.04 with virbr0 and switching to virbr1 afterwards works too.
