Somewhere between Tribe 5 and the most recent Gutsy update, this appears
to have been fixed. I can no longer can cause gdm to become
unresponsive after playing sounds.

Desktop halts loading when startup sound is played

After running Update Manager on Gutsy, I see that esound was removed.
Previously, I would be able to "unstick" the app that was trying to play
the sound by killing esd. But now even without esound the problem
persists.

It appears that mine are ok.
$ hostname
digi04-gutsy
$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 digi04-gutsy
[ ... ip6 entries snipped]
So for me, I still have the problem (gdm becomes unresponsive due to
sound problems) in Gutsy.

Would be nice to test on gutsy if that's still happening

Well, the desktop no longer halts during startup ... but that appears to
be because the startup "Log in" system sound is not played.
I do get a successful "test" of Sound playback in gnome-sound-properties:
System -> Preferences -> Sound
then press the Test button for Soundplayback under Sound
could anybody try on gutsy?

This is still present for me on Feisty, like Stephen said
"...after the user "ubuntu" is automatically logged in then the desktop
starts to render and then there is a sub-second of audio and the desktop
just freezes. I can reset the desktop (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace), however the
cycle just repeats."

Actually, I don't get this bug any more on Feisty. What happens when I
press Ctrl+Alt+backspace is X goes, but gdm doesn't start at all. After
manually killing gdm and starting it again, the login process is fine.

Bruce,
Thank you for your report.
Would you mind providing a few more details:
- Which version of Ubuntu you are using
- Describe whether this is an intermittent problem you experience or is it
something you can reproduce on-demand.
- Describe the manufacturer and model of system you have
- Upload
I can confirm this, after restarting X with Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, the log
in process stops just after the sound is played.

Thank you for your bug, might be the same problem than bug #13180, it
would be interesting to know if patching to package with that change
again fixes the problem
