This is still present for me on Feisty, like Stephen said "...after the user "ubuntu" is automatically logged in then the desktop starts to render and then there is a sub-second of audio and the desktop just freezes. I can reset the desktop (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace), however the cycle just repeats."
i'm not running from a LiveCD, it's installed locally to the hard disk. and also like stephen said ".the problem appears to be affected by whether or not the laptop is on AC power during startup. On battery, this problem is intermittent, versus it will consistently fail when on AC." doing some digging about i found that if i remove/delete the user account and the home directory (Then Restart) and add the user account again with out any groups. i can login fine (without audio)...when i add the user account into the "audio" group and restart i get this behavior. sorry for the lack of info, I'm not posting for my usual hole. please ask for specifics.
