I think it's better off as a tray icon because applets can't hide themselves automatically if needed. I think it adds more flexibility this way. Also, you can't just hide the icon by default when there is no wireless card (even if supported this), because it can also be used as an easy way to set

I already use the Network Monitor Applet 2.12.1 (written by Sun folks), wich is far better than this new NetworkManager (current version is 0.6.4, and it seems to be written by Red Hat folks). Your are correct, you should only have one. The network manager applets support changed in feisty to use "Network Applet 0.64" which is the official gnome network manager. Can you confirm how you installed feisty? Was it an upgrade from edgy (over the internet or from a fesity herdX cd)? Or was
