Try this as a workaround, tested on Ubuntu 7.1:
gksudo gedit /usr/share/app-install/desktop/nm-applet.desktop
Comment out

Add below it

as mentioned in https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-

gnome-panel when upgrading. Thus this is won't fix. The workaround is to
remove network-monitor manually from your gnome-panel.

I think it's better off as a tray icon because applets can't hide themselves
automatically if needed. I think it adds more flexibility this way.
Also, you can't just hide the icon by default when there is no wireless card
(even if supported this), because it can also be used as an easy way to set
Wrong Philipi, you can go into preferences->sessions and uncheck

It happened the same with me. I already use the Network Monitor Applet
2.12.1 (written by Sun folks), wich is far better than this new
NetworkManager (current version is 0.6.4, and it seems to be written by
Red Hat folks). I think that we should at least have the option to
remove this icon from the
I just upgraded to feisty and I saw the same thing. So I used synaptic
to remove network manager. Actually I had to. For some reason network
manager screwed up my wireless. I am now off to report this bug
somewhere else.

Confirming. Unfortunately there is no way to automatically change the
per-user gnome-panel configuration on updates, so that some folks will
end up with both the gnome network monitor and nm-applet.

I just made me suggestion upstream, feel free to comment, I think this
could be considered the same issue considering upstream has closed a
'nm-applet should be an applet and not always be in the notification
area' bug as sometihng that won't be changed.
** Bug watch added: GNOME Bug Tracker #4178
This should maybe only be enabled if there are wireless networks to use,
I use a wired desktop and I can't imagine I'll ever find a use for it,
especially given that it isn't even animated for activity.

Also, I believe this is counter to the HIG and it should be an applet
instead of a notification area icon. Or maybe just hide it when on only-
wired. Or have that as an option?

Your are correct, you should only have one. The network manager applets
support changed in feisty to use "Network Applet 0.64" which is the
official gnome network manager.
Can you confirm how you installed feisty? Was it an upgrade from edgy

Can you describe what duplicate icons you are talking about?
