It happened the same with me. I already use the Network Monitor Applet
2.12.1 (written by Sun folks), wich is far better than this new
NetworkManager (current version is 0.6.4, and it seems to be written by
Red Hat folks). I think that we should at least have the option to
remove this icon from the notification area. Currently the only way to
do this is uninstall the thing through apt-get remove. Maybe Linus
Torvalds was right when he said that Gnome hide many options,
sacrificing customization in favor of usability.
