I had the same problem some minutes ago, although only the shutdown icon
disappeared. I ran the command 'unity --reset' and brought it back; do I
need to keep the terminal open?
Also, even after installation, I can't find Compiz Manager anywhere.
Neither System Settings, nor the Dash when typing '

Did you change any of the settings on compiz manager?
Could you open a terminal window and run this command:
unity --reset
and see if this brings the sidebar back?
