I upgraded to 11.10 with the new kernels 3.* and haven't had the problem
since.

For me reverting to an older kernel did seem to help. I don't recall
ever having seen the problem with the older kernel.
The problem is somewhat intermittent - sometimes I can get it to wake up
cleanly - other times it won't. It seems like I have better luck if I
use the keyboard instead of the
